I just got a tip off about a new open source ecommerce solution in the works called Magneto. The details are pretty sketchy, but what they have mentioned on their blog sounds very compelling!

indeed the best innovation in os scene since a long time. looking forward to release.
We have done a lot of testing on the version that is currently available. This shop is really gorgeous. We are impatiently waiting for the GO, ie. the message that the latest version can be updated later, to set up the first Magento shop. And this will by no means be our last Magento shop.
