"I'm a serious user with actual products and thousands of customers. As such I had to spend more than two work weeks and several 100 Euros for 'commercial modules' to get even the most basic shopping cart features right. Cons: - most modules are commercial and many don't work as advertised - there's no way to look for an order based on a company name (and various other attributes) - there's no tax / VAT overview - guest accounts are seriously broken - virtual products are limited to one single file per purchase - one cannot produce an invoice if the customer has not payed yet (so how can he pay without invoice?) - it forces customers to enter phone numbers (totally useless for most merchants, cannot be disabled easily) Pros (compared to Zencart we've used before): - Good statistics - Looks better out of the box"

"I am now running four stores using PrestaShop and they are working really good. I swiched from Magento on one test store and it worked out really good. From there I more my three other stores. It is much easier to work with PrestaShop and I am getting more traffic. I think the tech support is really good in the US, and they have helped me on several occasions. I am enjoying an easier cart to manage, and an increase in sales. I love it. Cheers"

"I'm a developer, and I have to say that PS's code is absolute garbage. It's a nightmare to write modules for. It is written in a pseudo-MVC fashion, but even the default modules aren't written in a real MVC way. There are some controllers, but no views and some lousy models. By lousy I mean that you can't use the models even for basic CRUD operations. Modules are models/controllers mixed together, that usually echo raw HTML... This must have been written by collage freshmen at best."

"It took a little while to navigate around the platform and discover how the tools work. I had to spend some time on the forums but did receive the answers and suggestions that I have needed so far. Now that I have a damn good understanding of Prestashop - I love it! If people would understand that there is such a thing as a learning curve there would be a lot less negative commenting. If you are looking for a quick fix call GoDaddy. If you want to pony up the money to utilize someone's expertise shoot me an email and I'll build your store for you. Otherwise take the time to learn how to use the tools properly instead of blaming support. Prestashop - thumbs up! btw feel free to see what I am able to do with the tools http://onlineofficeusa.com"

"My experience is beyond horrible with PrestaShop. They only take away you money with no help for you. PrestaShop sided with developers trying to rip you off and treating the real customer like DIRT & think you're an idiot if you don't know how to fix your template. I so regret to have switched from Magento, I've learnt it a hard way with battle with the company and its developer for 2 months, NOW I'm going back to Magento!! Don't ever try to make the same mistake like I did, You will for sure regret this. Go for it only if you are French, or if you'd like to be treated like you're lower than French because they like to be making fun of their customers in French for sure!!"

"Prestashop works. It installs, somehow manages to handle and update a MySQL database and generate views that look like a store to your users. That's about it. The real problem with prestashop is that it's a verly poorly coded amalgamation of uneducated hacks. For instance, the latest version needs 128MB of allocated memory to display the list of modules in the admin, the 2checkout module has a bunch of unintialized variables in it, and also an untested and broken currency change routine. Bad development practices (they obviously don't test anything beyong... it loads!) coupled with generaly lame coding skills. Even the 'certified' module they sell for 200USD are obviously shameless broken copy-pastas from other broken modules. This software is a shame. It's not about personal experience, really. Any responsible admin should remove it from their server asap. Cheers."

"PrestaShop has been great for my business for more than 2 years now. It's extremely easy to use and I've doubled my sales since I first created my site. I've seen a few complaints about PrestaShop's support policies, but this is, open-source software, people! The basic version is heavily tested, but if I made custom changes to my own code that caused issues on my site, I wouldn't be expecting them to fix my personal mistakes for free. If you want free support, you can use their forums (I get almost all of my questions answered there), but I think some people get a little too selfish about a free product. I've used several different e-commerce options in the past, and there's a reason why these guys are growing faster than any of their competitors. Their software WORKS, plain and simple."

"Wao! This version ofnPrestaShop is simply incredible. I have my shop setup with credit cart terminals, ups, fedex, and it works very fast. To me, this was about a million time more powerfullnthan Magento and it runs much Gaster. My sales also increased 22% since I switch. I called their 800 number with a small issue, and despite being my mistake, their fixed the problem. The best product and techincal support. Thank you PrestaShop. "

"PrestaShop do not understand what the term 'customer service' means. The version I am using has a bug that many users are complaining about and it been present in a number of versions over the past 2 years. PrestaShop admitted on one occassion in the forums they new of the bug but have not offered any fix - they have been ignoring the growing number of users who are complaining about it. It is so frustration and dissapointing when you put so much time into developing these sites and a basic problem (the product name you are purchasing is not displayed in the invoices along with size, colour, etc) is being ignored by the developers. Not happy and not impressed."

"The best cart I've used, and I've used many! In a position to be the next big, go-to PHP cart (probably ousting Magento from that position soon), Prestashop installs in almost no time, is incredibly flexible, which does mean some configuration initially, and of course a good understanding of ecommerce development, but with that in mind the platform is fast, light, scalable, intuitive and customizable for anything you can imagine. The community is huge and growing, and there are many modules and templates available (even outside of the official add-on store). Give it a try, we've certainly been happy with it! Oh, and they release new versions regularly with great improvements every time!"

"OK ... when I read someone say "easy" I get excited. Until I attempt their "easy." Next time someone tells you that a shopping cart is "easy," ask them how much experience they have with shopping cart technology? To someone who understands this stuff and have a lot of experience, it may be easy. To me, it wasn't. Most was "easy" until it came to calculating the shipping. WOW! Unbelievable. It just wouldn't work. It seemed pretty simple, but it just won't work. I'm scrapping it for something, how should I say this ... oh ... "easy.""

"My whole experience with PrestaShop is good. Unlike other open source shopping carts PrestaShop is very easy to install and customize. CSS is easy to modify too. PrestaShop supports unlimited categories, sub-categories, image pictures. I find very useful the possibility to give different permissions to sub-admin users. Of course, as any other open source shopping cart it lacks some features, but I’ve extended its functionality with a help of additional software - Store Manager for PrestaShop (http://www.prestashopmanager.com). It’s great for bulk updates, products export/import and has a very reasonable price."

"While I like Prestashop, I feel like it’s intentionally incomplete. With other true open source carts, their is a community who offers all kinds of plug-ins. Most of which are free, or at least very reasonably priced. I just don’t get that same vibe with Prestashop. To me, it feels like a gimmick. It doesn’t feel like an open source community at all. It feels like a French company who offers the base product for free (calling it open source) but then charges an arm and a leg to get it working and looking the way you want. It seems all the module writers are hanging around to cash-in vs help out the “community” thus making this whole “open source” concept null and void. It feels like a very gimmicky business plan. Prestashop's overpriced modules really make this feel like a “bait-n-switch” compared to true open-source communities. While the base cart is "free" to get it working, is far from it: $140.00 - Average template cost. Only 1 template ships with base package. $329 for the Sage or Authorize.net plug-in gateway to accept Visa Mastercard $75 for FexEx module through an outside developer. $132 for UPS mdule $132 for USPS module $99 for Free shipping module $53 Twitter Plugin $40 FaceBook Plugin $197 for SEO plug-in So the actual cost is $1,097 + I have to install the software and every module myself and with that cost comes NO free tech support! Still sound like a "free open source" cart to you? "

"Having origonally spent weeks builing my first site with oscommerce, then upgraded to zen cart before trying prestashop , it has to be said that prestashop is by far the easiest to customize and has the most features as standard. The only paid module that is 100% needed is onepagecheckout. (cost around 20 euro) I now have 3 prestashop sites, each one made regular sales from the word go, something that never happens with os or zen. Presta just looks tidyer and doesn't feel like an out of the box shop. I'm not really a developer, but can put together a presta site in a couple of hours start to finish. Have just started to sell ecommerce sites and hosting. Love prestashop. If u want to upgrade from zen I highly recommend it"

"Prestashop has been growing and improving extremely fast, both in number of users / forum members, and in development / features added. The Prestashop forum has grown as well, it reached nearly 50,000 members, and it the best way to get help / support for any prestashop related questions / problems. I am an English Moderator on the Prestashop forum, and I see many people that are far less tech savvy than me that manage to install and customize their own shops, and install themes, modules and modification with little or no help. I have many useful modules for Prestashop on my store (http://www.presto-changeo.com/), like a filter module, a translation module (which I used to translate my site to 15 other languages), and an attribute wizard module that lets you customized your attributes similar to apple’s website. There are also many useful Prestashop tips that I've added there, worth checking out...."

Prestashop Shopping Cart is another of the up and coming free solutions. It's free, although many of the modules cost money - and aren't cheap. For example, the SEO module, which really should be out of the box, costs 150 Euros. Add on 2 or 3 modules and you suddenly have a shopping cart which is far from free.

The default skin certainly needs a lot of work, and the backend seems a bit buggy. While plenty of work is going on, you might want to wait a version for those who don't enjoy tampering with code themselves.
