"In my opinion a lot of free software is let down by poor documentation. This software is no exception. It does everything that it claims to, and it's easy to do what you want ONCE YOU KNOW HOW. But FINDING OUT how can be very a frustrating experience. The forums are a bit hit and miss with getting info. Some people get great help, some are ignored. Searching the site is also hit and miss, because you'll find large numbers of matching but irrelevant entries. If you're serious about customising the site, I'd recommend getting hold of some books (try Amazon). If you want to use it out of the box without many changes, it's fine. If you want to modify it, be prepared for some frustration. If you're in a hurry, perhaps take a deep breath and review what else is available - even if it's not free. Time is money, and it might end up cheaper in the long run to have something which you can change quickly and easily."

"It may seem difficult to create a spectacular and business-fit online store. But with oscommerce, you only need to explore the package, add some creativity and wollaa! Your store is finished magnificently!"

"Oscommerce is a superb collaborative piece of work. It is usable ‘out of the box’, but, if you're prepared to put in a few hours, read the tips section of the forum and install a few contributions it can quite easily be customised to produce a great, custom styled shopping experience. I started out with no Knowledge of PHP, MySQL whatsoever, and even now my skills are very limited – but I was able to quickly locate the information I needed to create the store that I wanted."

"OSC is an extremely customisable solution the gives a webdeveloper every bit of flexibilty to change how the cart/site looks, feels and functions. OSC is not for the beginner, and requires a savvy operator to customise appropriately. Version3 of Oscommerce (to be released in 2007) is a complete re-write of the solution, with even more integrated features, templating and customisation built into the base product. OSCs greatest asset is its huge forum and contributions submitted by OSC members all over the world."

"I know people love this shopping cart, but I absolutely cannot stand it. I've worked with it a number of times on client sites and it leaves me shaking my fist in the air every single time. The admin is confusing, it is difficult to locate options and features to turn them on or off. You need to know a goodly amount of php to truly modify the cart so it no longer looks like oscommerce. It is impossible to make this cart meet web standards or validate with clean code. I know there are "pumped up" paid versions, and I assume when one really "knows" the cart, it's easier to use, but I greatly dislike it. I'd recommend ZenCart over oscommerce any day."

"Don't waste your time unless you intend to use it as is out of the box and I wouldn't recommend that personally as the default design is so old and tired. There are lots of user contributions, but you have to be very careful not to step on one another when you apply them. I made some major adjustments to the look and feel and flow, but not without a huge cost and basically just throwing away any possibility of upgrading. I haven't looked at Zen, but if I was going with a freeware again that would seem to be one possibility. I just don't understand why so many webhosts are still carrying this one (including my current!) Good luck."

"The cart requires register globals on. No template system is provided. "Contributions" from other users number in the hundreds to thousands and all are hard to implement. It requires you to hack up your osc files in order to do the most basic of things. The cart is plagued with exploits and hacks. The developers don't do much to improve it such as incorporating a template system and many other things that should come standard. The file structure, administration, installation. I tried it for about a week before moving to Zen Cart which is a fork of OSC but with all the goodies by default. I wouldn't let my mother use OSC it's pretty bad. Help on their forums is horrible too. There are so many people asking for help and their site only displays about 20 posts at a time. So in about an hour your post is moved onto the 2nd or 3rd page without a response. Zen-Cart is the ugpraded bigger, better, faster version of OSC. OSC was really popular for a while because it was the best there was but it was still horrible. The development community was drown out by those in charge never upgrading it the way it should have been. If they fix the file structure and add a template system it wouldn't be that bad. But Zen has already done that and probably better than the OSC developers could do so I'll stick with them unless something better comes along."

"If your PHP, HTML and MySQL savy, this free cart may be for you. This cart has many nice feature but lacks many user interfaces to do typical admin and color/layout customizations."

"I went through (paid for) two other major shopping cart softwares before I tried osCommerce. After a year and a half of working with it (one year with it "live") I am very pleased with it. Besides being open source, it is the most customizable solution I have found. Between the thousands of user submitted modifications (known as "contributions" on the site) and the open code that you can tweak, you can adjust it to do just about anything. But even more beneficial, in my opinion, is the well established and helpful user forum at the osCommerce website. With all the positive I can say about it, I must also say that it isn't for everyone. "Out of the box" it is fully functional and generally as good as most carts you pay for. But there are some tasks that should be done after installation that require some knowledge of how to manage your web site. Also to do the modifications I mentioned, one must "get under the hood". In summary, I like and wouldn't use anything else now."

"We have been using this cart for 3 years now after migrating from the ezicommerce cart. Although some programming and html experience is needed to get this cart working optimally, it is still a great solution 'out of the box'. A robust and helpful community is a great asset for this cart. There are many add-ons developed by users and the development team is continually improving the security and backend. We can thoroughly recommend this cart for advanced users or those keen to learn some simple PHP. "

Shopping Cart Reviews Comments This is certainly one of the best shopping carts available in the market today. First of all it's absolutely free. The second thing is that, it has tons of features. Since it is an open source cart, at any point of time, if you see any feature, which you may need, you can simply put a request for that in the forum. Really an outstanding cart!
